The Department of Communication Studies can provide a solid academic
foundation for students and also serve a variety of career objectives.
An essential component of a liberal arts education, communication competence
is a requirement for most positions in modern business and industry.
The Department of Communication Studies is small enough to provide
outstanding graduate and undergraduate teaching, yet large enough to
rank as one of the finest programs in the country (the Department recently
ranked first in the nation in research productivity among private University
Master's level programs).
We offer two degree programs, a Bachelor
of Arts and a Bachelor
of Science. The B.A. consists of 27 semester hours and
must include a minor. In addition, the BA requires the completion
of 6 hours of foreign language at the sophomore level.
The B.S. degree requires 36 hours in the major and does not require
(although we recommend) a minor. In addition, the BS allows diligent
students to either complete a second major or a second minor, if
desired. Two programs are offered with the BS degree.
The Communication Studies emphasis provides a fundamental
grounding in the process of communication. Courses help students to
understand and analyze communication in interpersonal, business, and
public speaking settings. The Communication in Human Relations emphasis
provides students with the tools and skills needed to become proficient
communicators in public settings, on the job, or in their relationships
with others. A minor is
also available, as well as an option that allows students to obtain
both an undergraduate major and a master's degree in five years (3/2
program).
